Touched

Lacking adventures, the quotidian mind copes by elevating mundane details to the level of ersatz thrills: mushrooms sprouting indoors, a wink from an attractive villain on the street, two yolks emerging from a single egg.

An old woman plays an erhu in a Red Line station, syncing up perfectly with "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" like a second singing saw descant. The dulled soul soars in response, and the slumbering mind realizes: it's been too damn long since I've traveled beyond the boundaries of the CTA.
